En España, Lyle Mays es, sobre todo, conocido como integrante del Pat Metheny Group. Sus ofertas en solitario apenas han tenido repercusión en nuestro país. Sus discos a su nombre son escasos y también el sello donde graba: "Geffen" está mal distribuido en nuestro país. En 1992 grabó un excelente álbum al que titulo: "Fictionary" y al que al menos la distribuidora española si promocionó. Cuando dejó la banda de Pat Metheny ingresó en la orquesta de Woody Herman donde estuvo dos años, entre 1975 y 1976. En el año 2000 vuelve a grabar un disco a su nombre con el sello Warner Brothers y al que tituló "Solo". En él, sin acompañantes ni partituras de por medio, Lyle Mays improvisa al piano y aunque el empeño se le reconoce, el resultado no cumplió las expectativas que de él se esperaban. Quizás hubo poco jazz y mucho de ese pastiche que algunos llaman new age y que no se sabe bien que es.
